  • Returning to action after a long lay-off of nearly two years due to injury, India's premier gymnast Dipa Karmakar clinched the gold medal in the vault event of FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup at Mersin, Turkey on 8 july.
  • The 24-year-old from Tripura, who had finished fourth in the vault event at the 2016 Rio Olympics, scored 14.150 to win gold on 8july.

  • An environmental pressure group claimed 9july that Chinese factories are illegally using ozone-depleting CFCs, which have recently seen a spike in emissions that has baffled scientists
  • The Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) campaign group said 18 factories in 10 Chinese provinces they looked into admitted to using banned chlorofluorocarbons.
  • Producers and traders told EIA researchers posing as buyers that the majority of Chinese companies manufacturing foam in high demand as an insulator in the booming construction sector continue to use CFC-11 because of its better quality and lower price.
  • CFCs are chemicals that deplete the ozone layer, the thin gaseous shield that protects life on Earth from dangerous solar rays.
  • They were banned under the internationally binding 1987 Montreal Protocol and production of CFCs officially ended in developing countries in 2010.
  • Chinese authorities said the country successfully ended the industrial practice of using CFCs in 2007. The environment ministry in Beijing could not immediately be reached for comment

  • In a statement, No. 10 thanked Johnson for his work and said a replacement would be announced shortly. "This afternoon, the Prime Minister accepted the resignation of Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary," the statement said.

  • Davis resigned late on 8 july night, declaring he could not support May's Brexit plan as it involved too close a relationship with the EU and gave only an illusion of control being returned to the UK after it left the EU.
  • "It seems to me we're giving too much away, too easily, and that's a dangerous strategy at this time," Davis said after resigning.

  • The Gujarat government will grant the status of religious minority to Jews in the state and a notification to this effect will be issued soon, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said on Thursday, fulfilling a long-pending demand of the community.
  • This was revealed by Chief Minister Rupani during his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu here.
  • During the 45-minute long meeting, Rupani told Netanyahu that "an in principle decision has been taken to grant Gujarati Jews the status of religious minority".
  • A notification to this effect shall be issued soon by the government, he said.Gujarat has a small Jewish community comprising less than 200 members.
  • The main stronghold of the Jews in Gujarat has pre-dominantly been Ahmedabad, where Magen Abraham Synagogue is located.
  • Rupani is on a six-day visit to Israel. It is his first trip abroad as chief minister and comes months after he hosted Prime Minister Netanyahu in Gujarat in January.

  • China on 9 july successfully launched two remote sensing satellites for Pakistan, marking the first international commercial launch for the Long March-2C rocket in about 19 years.
  • The satellites PRSS-1 and PakTES-1A were launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in northwest China at 11:56 am, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
  • The PRSS-1 is China's first optical remote sensing satellite sold to Pakistan. It is the 17th satellite developed by the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST) for an overseas buyer, it said.
  • A scientific experiment satellite, PakTES-1A, developed by Pakistan, was sent into orbit via the same rocket.After entering orbit, the PRSS-1 is in good condition with its solar panels unfolded smoothly, according to the CAST.
  • The PRSS-1 will be used for land and resources surveying, monitoring of natural disasters, agriculture research, urban construction and providing remote sensing information for the Belt and Road region.
  • The satellite, which has a designed life of seven years, is equipped with two panchromatic/multispectral cameras, with a resolution up to a meter and a coverage range of 60 km.
  • Designers say the two cameras are among the best exported remote sensing cameras made by China. They can be used to monitor plant diseases and pests, the report said.

  • Shivaprasad Varmudi, a farmer near Perla on the border with Kerala, has cultivated 104 varieties of jackfruit on two acres. He told The Hindu that 22 trees which are four years old began yielding from this year.
  • The orchard has 140 grafted plants. He said that the grafting was done after he personally tasted the fruits of different varieties in various places including in jackfruit festivals.
  • Mr. Varmudi’s plantation is about 4.45 km away from Perla town.
